Summer television is typically a sad state of unwatched fare, but at least we have scoops and rumors to keep us intrigued until our favorite real shows — the fall shows — are back on the airwaves.
And the latest gossip to reach us from EW.com: Someone on “90210” is gay! Are you shocked? Awed? Excited? Wait, you’re not? Oh, you think Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) dating and making out with Gia (Rumer Willis) was a gay storyline? No, no, no, let’s clear this up: just because Aid experimented with a short-lived girl relationship ending with Gia cheating on her and then being caught back in a heterosexual love triangle with Navid and Latin pop star Javier does not a lesbian plotline make.
Viewers, you must be savvier than this, right? But you’ve been patient. You’ve waited long enough and now producers are going to give you an actual gay character, one that will presumably stay gay the entire season, one that addresses “the issue in a real and relatable way” (as quoted by co-executive producer Jennie Urman to EW).
So who is this new character? To add fuel to fall fire, it looks like it will be someone we already know. Apparently, Teddy (Trevor Donovan), Liam (Matt Lanter) and Navid (Michael Steger) are all possible contenders to emerge from the closet.
Liam seemed to please both Naomi and her sis in the sack; Navid said goodbye to his virginity last season (and could they really play the same-sex card with both Aid and Navid?); so only “playboy” Teddy is left — I never really bought his love for Silver … and he did mysteriously leave boarding school. I guess it could work.
But let’s hope the show’s producers actually stick with the storyline this time. There are only so many shows (we’re looking at you “Pretty Little Liars”) that can use the girl-on-girl or guy-on-guy gimmick and claim they are exploring “real” issues. Keep this in mind: In the real world, gay teens don’t just up and turn straight next semester.
